How My Journey as an Aromatherapist Began
As a clinical social worker, I saw a need for holistic care options to complement traditional treatments. This sparked my interest in exploring how tools like aromatherapy could support emotional well-being and empower clients in their self-care.
While working in medical, mental health, and behavioral health systems, I encountered gaps in care that often left patients feeling unsupported. I became passionate about prevention, stabilization, and revitalization in wellness. At the same time, I also had my own personal journey of finding benefits in utilizing various holistic, alternative, complementary, and integrative modalities.
This dual perspective, both professional and personal, led me to revisit integrative therapies I’d been introduced to as a child, such as essential oils, herbs, and nutrition. I became especially curious about the role of aromatherapy in areas like stress relief, emotional balance, and mental health care. I also wondered how these approaches could align with traditional mental health therapy for people that struggle with chronic issues like illness, pain, anxiety, trauma, and being in recovery from a substance use disorder.
Embracing Aromatherapy
My interest in aromatherapy grew while working as a medical social worker, where I observed its skilled evidence-based use in hospice and healthcare settings. I appreciated its affordability and versatility but also recognized the need for responsible use, especially regarding interactions with medications or conditions. To ensure I could use it safely and ethically, I decided to pursue formal training in clinical aromatherapy, completing over 450 hours of coursework (with additional training and continuing education totaling over 1,000 hours at this point).
This education deepened my understanding of aromatherapy’s therapeutic potential and its ability to complement traditional mental health approaches. It became clear that when used appropriately, aromatherapy is not only empowering but also safe, accessible, and versatile for clients’ self-care.
Empowering You with Integrative Care
Today, I integrate aromatherapy into my mental health practice as one of many tools to support holistic wellness. While my foundation is in evidence-based therapies, I value the role of complementary approaches in addressing the unique needs of each individual.
